I had to look up the book to see how it could be so entirely different from the others I had read by Quinn. he is not an appealing person! And the female lead regresses as well, becoming more naive and bratty! Even the supporting characters make some really shocking 'misjudgments' to put it kindly, which reflect very poorly on their character. The thing is, he instead got worse! Like, truly, egotistical, misogynistic, controlling, manhandling, petty, patronizing, has a bad temper. The male lead was spoiled and cocky and not super considerate from the start, but I'm willing to allow for plenty of character growth. I thoroughly enjoyed some of Quinn's later books, so I was very pleased to start this one. I was able to ignore the over-use of cliches, the familiar plot choices, and a little bending of history and enjoyed Splendid for what it was, a fun romantic romp and a fine example of the direction this author was heading. But getting them to agree to marry takes plenty of scheming, misunderstandings, and romantic entanglements. Of course the two fall in love much to the approval of both their families. He is a green eyed dark haired rake who has sworn off marriage. She is a feisty red headed beauty who is planning on returning to America and running her father’s business. From this book one can see the wit that she would develop although I have to admit, some of the plot lines were a little familiar. Splendid by Julia Quinn is her debut novel and as I am a fan of her Bridgerton series, I was interested in seeing where she began.
